Since the beginning of Girl Scouting, Girl Scout uniforms
have been accessorized by sateen ties, hosiery, bandanas, hats, and
more. These accessories can still be found
as part of today’s Girl Scout uniform.
Brownies can be seen wearing the Brownie Beanie on their head, while
adults can be seen in silk scarves wrapped around their necks.
Accessories have long been a part of the Girl Scouting tradition with
the longest running accessory being the Neckerchief. Neckerchiefs have been worn by Girl Scouts
since the days of Girl Guides. Every
morning, Girl Guides were to tie a knot in their neckerchief as a reminder to
perform a good deed. When a good deed
was done, they could un-tie the knot.
Today, there is a wide variety of neckerchiefs worn by Girl Scouts, from
silk to cotton, blue to green; these scarves are worn as belts, neck ties, and
bandannas. Visit the Girl Scouts of Nassau County’s, scarves page for all the Girl
Scout scarves we offer.

Another long standing tradition in Girl Scouting is the use of the Brownie
Beanie Hat to accessorize the Brownie Girl Scout uniform. In 1941, the new Brownie cap was created. It consisted of a brown felt beanie, made
with six sections, and a tan felt Brownie emblem. This same Brownie Beanie exists today with a
new emblem- a light blue Brownie Elf. In
recent years, the Beanie style hat has been made available to Daisy Girl Scouts
as well. Visit the Girl Scouts of Nassau
County’s, hat page for all the Girl Scout headwear we offer.
